Lord of the Flies -- Post 2 (pgs. 48 - 94)

Summary: At the beginning of the next chapter, Ralph spots a large boat off in the distance. He was ecstatic about it because he believed the fire they had consistently been burning would notify the crew that they were there. The fire, however, had been put out. Ralph ran to the location of the fire and discovered Jack and his buddies chanting about a pig they had managed to hunt down and kill, Ralph was furious about it because the fire could have been their way out but, no one was there managing it therefore causing the ship to sail away.

Ralph, in all his fury, calls a meeting for that night to discuss what needs to be done. When a conch is sounded to start the meeting, he starts in a very serious tone addressing the issues. The island is not clean anymore, no one cares about their hygiene, keeping the fire on the mountain burning is more important than hunting pigs, and the "beast" is not real. All of the little kids had been worrying about a beast they may have seen scurrying around in the night that may attack them.

Many fights were brought on about the aforementioned beast. Jack did not agree with what Ralph was saying. Piggy was always trying to butt in. All of the little kids had lost interest in the matter at hand. The meeting concluded when it became too dark to talk about it any more and the children hurried into the huts. Except one innocent child, Percival, who laid in the surrounding grass crying about missing
his family.

Text-to-text connection: Ralph spotted a boat far off int he distance and attempted to summon it. This moment is very similar to the book Life of Pi. Pi is stranded in the middle of the ocean. One day he saw a ship far off in the distance. He attempts to grab its attention by setting off a flare but it is useless. The boat is too big and much too far away to take notice. Lord of the Flies, similar to Pi's story is a stranded boy wanting to get out but failing when there is a possibility of getting saved.

Text-to-self connection: Simon refuses to eat his pork after the pig is hunted and killed. Jack, the leader of the choir boys, grabs a piece of meat for him and practically shoves it down his throat. This sounds very similar to what my mom did when I was a kid. I was not a huge fan of vegetables to my mom would have to force and beg me to eat them. It was a big struggle but, similar to the book, the power figure alwasy ends up prevailing and getting the kid to eat.
